Registration deadlines for a vehicle imported from the EU

If the owner of a vehicle registered abroad is a foreigner or a legal entity registered abroad, the vehicle involved in road traffic must be registered in Latvia if it is located in Latvia for more than three months. The condition applies to all categories of EU citizens.

If the owner of a vehicle registered abroad is a resident of Latvia or a legal entity registered in Latvia, the vehicle involved in road traffic must be registered in Latvia within 5 days of its acquisition or import into Latvia.

If a vehicle imported from abroad is not used in road traffic, it may not be registered, but the vehicle must be presented for vehicle data verification within five days after its import into Latvia;

For information on people who can register a vehicle in Latvia, see: Persons who must register vehicles If the holder of the vehicle is a person who is not a Citizen of Latvia or a non-citizen and who has not obtained a residence permit issued in Latvia, the vehicle is registered in Latvia with a period of validity of the registration certificate of 6 months.

The use of a vehicle in road traffic which is not registered in accordance with the prescribed procedure is administratively responsible. Under the first paragraph of Section 72 of the Road Traffic Law, a fine of between eleven and twenty eight fine units (EUR 55 to 140) applies for that infringement.
