Obtaining a learner driver's permit
A learner driver's permit is issued to a person who has been assigned a personal identity number in Latvia.
To learn to drive vehicles in categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B or C1, a learner drivers permit is required for anyone who does not have a driving licence. A moped driving licence may also be used to learn to drive vehicles in categories A1, A2, A, B1, B or C1. To obtain a permit, a person must have reached the following age:
- 12 years - to obtain a permit to learn to drive vehicles of category AM;
- 14 years - to obtain a permit to learn to drive vehicles of categories A1 and B1;
- 16 years - to obtain a permit to learn to drive vehicles of categories A2, B and C1;
- 22 years - to obtain a permit to learn to drive category A vehicles.
You can obtain a learner driver's permit in one of the 10 CSDD customer service centres throughout Latvia, where driver licensing services are provided.
Necessary documents:
- identity document - passport, personal identification (ID) card, driving licence, driving licence of a recreational vessel or small vessel, driving permit;
- medical examination (medical certificate). The person can check its validity in the e-CSDD or at CSDD customer service center. The medical examination may be performed at a general practitioner or with medical commissions established in medical institutions;
- a previously issued driving training permit (if it has been issued and is still valid).
A learner driver’s permit is not issued to a person if he/she has been deprived of the right to drive vehicles (or has been prohibited from obtaining them) or has been issued a driving licence of the same category (unless the person has passed a theoretical exam to restore the right to drive vehicles).
