Vessel registration deadlines

Registration must be made within 5 days after the vessel:

  • purchase or import from abroad;
  • changes in the data of the owner (possessor) or the holder specified in the registration certificate;
  • changes in the registered technical data. The change need not be recorded if the vessel is temporarily operated by another outboard engine (not specified in the registration certificate) with a power not exceeding 36.8 kW. If the power of the outboard engine used for the vessel is 36.8 kW or more, the person must certify the right to use it with the relevant registration certificate or certificate of ownership of the engine of the vessel.

Rowing boats are registered on a voluntary basis, unless the municipality or another owner of inland waters intends to register rowing boats in the waters belonging to it.

In order to participate in waterborne traffic, the vessel's engine must be specified in the vessel's registration certificate. The engine may not be listed on the vessel's registration certificate in the following cases:

  • if the engine power is less than 3.7 kW;
  • if a certificate of ownership of the vessel's engine issued by the CSDD is present (the certificate may also be issued to another person). A certificate of ownership of a vessel's engine is issued only for a outboard engine (more: Registration of the outboard engine of the vessel in Latvia);
  • if accompanied by a registration certificate of another vessel in which the engine to be used is registered.
