Action if a vehicle is found

If a movable property (including a vehicle) is found and the finder does not know who lost it, according to Section 945 of the Civil Law, the finder must notify the nearest police station within one week from the day of finding it. If the owner of the property is not found within six months from the date of the advertisement by the police, according to Section 949 of the Civil Law the ownership of found property or money received from the sale thereof (Section 946) accrues to the finder, with the proviso that storage and other expenses shall be imposed on him or her. In such a case, a proof of ownership issued by the court or other authority which made the relevant decision must be submitted for registration of the vehicle. The disposition of found property is set out in more detail in Part 3 of Subchapter Two of Chapter Three of the Civil Law, entitled "Finding of Property".
