Vehicles corresponding to the categories of foreign driving licences

A1 - motorcycles with an engine capacity not exceeding 125 cm ³, a power not exceeding 11 kilowatts and a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kilowatts per kg, as well as tricycles with a power not exceeding 15 kilowatts;
A2 - motorcycles with a power not exceeding 35 kilowatts, power ratio to weight not exceeding 0.2 kilowatts per kilogram and which are not derived from vehicles with a power greater than 2 times;
A - motorcycles, as well as such tricycles with a power exceeding 15 kilowatts;
B1 - quadricycles;
B - motor vehicles other than motorcycles in category A with a maximum mass not exceeding 3500 kg and designed and constructed for the carriage of no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, and the coupling of a tractor vehicle with a trailer in this category having a maximum mass does not exceed 750 kg. The coupling of a tractorvehicle with a trailer with a maximum mass exceeding 750 kg is also permitted, provided that the maximum mass of this combination does not exceed 4250 kg;
C1 - motor vehicles other than those in categories D1 or D with a maximum mass exceeding 3500 kg but not exceeding 7500 kg and designed and constructed for the carriage of no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, and the coupling of a tractor vehicle with a trailer in that category does not exceed 750 kg;
C - motor vehicles other than those in categories D1 or D with a maximum mass exceeding 3500 kg and designed and constructed for the carriage of no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, and the coupling of a tractor vehicle with a trailer in that category having a maximum mass does not exceed 750 kg;
D1 - motor vehicles designed and intended for the carriage of no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and with a length not exceeding 8 meters, as well as the coupling of a tractor vehicle of this category to a trailer with a maximum mass does not exceed 750 kg;
D - motor vehicles designed and intended for the carriage of more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver, as well as the coupling of a tractor vehicle with a trailer of this category with a maximum mass does not exceed 750 kg;
BE - combination of a tractor vehicle in category B with a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum mass exceeding 3500 kg;
C1E - Coupling of a tractor vehicle in category C1 with a trailer or semi-trailer having a maximum mass exceeding 750 kg if the maximum mass of such coupling does not exceed 12 000 kg, or coupling of a tractor vehicle in category B with a trailer or semi-trailer having a maximum mass exceeding 3500 kg does not exceed 12,000 kg;
Coupling of a category CE - C tractor vehicle with a trailer having a maximum mass exceeding 750 kg;
D1E - combination of a tractor vehicle in category D1 with a trailer having a maximum mass exceeding 750 kg;
Coupling of a tractor vehicle in category DE - D with a trailer having a maximum mass exceeding 750 kg.

A driver who arrives in Latvia from abroad and stays in Latvia for more than one year must exchange a driving licence in accordance with certain procedures, except for a driving licence issued by a Member State of the European Union, a European Free Trade Association or United Kingdom, as well as persons enjoying diplomatic or consular immunities and privileges. The foreign licence is exchanged after passing the driving test at the CSDD (Road Traffic Safety Directorate).
