General information
If a vehicle is not to be used in road traffic for some time, it can temporarily be deregistered, with the handover of the number plates to the CSDD. For the duration of the temporary deregistration of the vehicle, no vehicle operation tax or company car tax needs to be paid.
Temporary deregistration of a vehicle temporarily, with the handover of the number plates, revokes the permission to use the vehicle in road traffic. This is recorded in the Register of Vehicles and Their Drivers.
In order to make it possible to drive a temporarily deregistered vehicle in road traffic, it must be re-registered (more: ‘Re-registration of a temporarily deregistered vehicle’).
The number plates handed over with the deregistration of the vehicle are kept at the CSDD customer service centre where they were handed over, for 5 years. This period cannot be extended. After the period expires, the plates are destroyed. If one wishes to keep the plates for another five years, one can re-register the vehicle before the expiry of the number plate retention period, and then immediately temporarily deregister the vehicle again.
It is forbidden to export a temporarily deregistered vehicle from Latvia. To export such a vehicle from Latvia, it must be deregistered for export from Latvia (more: "Deregistration of a vehicle for exporting from Latvia").
