Taxi number plates

The national registration number for taxis shall be registered and the corresponding number plates ("yellow" number plates) shall be issued to a vehicle which, in accordance with the laws and regulations on commercial passenger transport, is permitted for commercial passenger transport and which must be equipped with taxi number plates.

A taxi number shall be assigned if the State Register of Vehicles and their Drivers contains a note made by an institution specified in regulatory enactments regarding commercial passenger transport by taxis for the receipt of taxi number plates for a specific vehicle owned or held by the carrier.  

The change of the taxi number to the general use registration number ("white" number plates) must be carried out in the following cases:

  • the vehicle is removed from the register for its alienation in Latvia or export from Latvia;
  • the registered holder of the vehicle is deleted, or the change of holder is registered;
  • has been made a note to cancel the licence card.

It is permitted to change the taxi number to the general state registration numbers if there is a note in the vehicle register made by the institution regarding the cancellation of the licence card.

The change of the taxi number to the general state registration number does not have to be performed if the CSDD registers a change of the owner of the vehicle in the customer service centre, indicating as the holder the person indicated in the note in the vehicle register for receiving taxi number plates.

If the CSDD issued a licence and a card for commercial passenger transport using general-use state registration plates ("white" number plates), these restrictions on registration activities do not have to be complied with.

  • The procedure for assigning taxi number plates and changing numbers shall be determined on 30.11.2010. Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 1080 "Vehicle Registration Regulations".
