General information

One additional license plate marked with an identical combination of symbols can be issued once for a vehicle, if:

  • a device intended for the transportation of bicycles or additional luggage is installed on the vehicle and this device or the luggage transported with it covers the license plate installed on the vehicle, if the manufacturer of the device has provided a place for the installation of the license plate;
  • one of the vehicle's number plates (one or two) is lost or stolen.

If the vehicle has been issued license plates (with the Latvian flag) corresponding to the national standard LVS 20:1999 "Vehicle State Registration Number Plates", in case of loss, an additional number with the EU symbol will be issued to the vehicle, which is intended to be installed with only one license plate. If an additional number will be received by the bike holder, in this case all license plates (with EU symbols) will have to be made in place of the damaged ones. The fee for making one license plate is 11.16 euros.

Additional icense plates are made within 30 days, but at the CSDD Riga customer service center - within 2 hours.

An additional number can be obtained by the vehicle owner (possessor), keeper or a person authorized by him (see "Persons who may register a vehicle")  by presenting his / her personal passport or ID card. A driver's license issued by the CSDD may be presented if the Population Register contains information of a valid passport or ID card.

Important! If a change of holder or owner is registered for a vehicle to which an additional number plate has been assigned, the new holder or, respectively, the acquirer shall certify in the application that he is aware of the fact of the issuance of the additional number plate. The new owner or holder of the vehicle will also not be able to receive an additional number again.

If an additional license plate is lost, the number change is registered and license plates are issued in place of the lost ones (see "Renewal of a lost or stolen vehicle number").
