Number plate types

Depending on the construction and type of vehicles, the following types of number plates are defined in Latvia, according to which number plates are manufactured:

  • Type A (520 x 110 mm) - intended for installation at the front as well as at the rear of vehicles, if there is a suitable mounting on the vehicle (not installed on motorcycles, tricycles, quadricycles and mopeds, unless the vehicle manufacturer's design provides space for this type of number plate);
  • Type B (280 x 200 mm) - intended for installation at the rear of vehicles for which it is not structurally possible to affix a type A number plate (not installed on motorcycles, tricycles, quadricycles and mopeds);
  • Type C (240 x 130 mm) - intended for installation on the rear of motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, as well as on the front or rear of vehicles for which it is not structurally possible to affix a type A or B number plate;
  • Type E (300 x 110 mm) - intended for installation on vehicles to which special registration plates are issued
  • Type F (177 x 130 mm) - intended for installation on the rear of motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles for which it is not structurally possible to affix a type C number plate;
  • Type G (133 x 165 mm) - intended for installation at the rear of mopeds;
  • Type H (133 x 165 mm) - for installation at the rear of off-road vehicles.

Type A, B and C general use number plates intended for installation on motor vehicles consist of two letters of the Latin alphabet and one to four digits representing the numbers 1 to 9999. Type A and B number plates intended for installation on trailers (semi-trailers) consist of a single letter of the Latin alphabet and one to four digits representing the numbers 1 to 9999. Type A  number plates intended for installation on mopeds consist of a single letter of the Latin alphabet and one to four digits representing the numbers 1 to 999. Letter symbols may be used instead of the last two digits of the number plates for trailers, semi-trailers and mopeds. Type A, B and C number plates intended for installation on trailers (semi-trailers) consist of a single letter of the Latin alphabet and one to four digits representing the numbers 1 to 9999.

In type A number plates, the letters are separated from the numbers by a horizontal line.

Type F number plates consist of two letters of the Latin alphabet and one to three digits forming numbers from 1 to 999.

Type G number plates consist of single letter of the Latin alphabet and one to three digits forming numbers from 1 to 999. Letter symbols can be used instead of the last two digits.

Number plates comply with the following essential technical requirements:

  • number plates are made with a certain size and placement of symbols in number plates;
  • the number plates and the materials of the coating intended for this purpose and a certain coloring are used in the number plates;
  • certain safety features are incorporated in the number plates;
  • the number plates have a coating of reflective material and are protected against corrosion;
  • the number plates and their coating, when properly used and stored, retain their mechanical strength.
