General information

Technical modification of the vehicle means changes in its design/composition including change, replacement or removal of assemblies, bodywork, systems, devices, mechanisms, units or parts or installation of auxiliary equipment resulting in changes in vehicle data or vehicle design characteristics.

Technical expertise is mandatory in case of a technical modification. The technical expertise can be undergone at any suitable roadworthiness testing station for the vehicle category in question.

Modifications to the vehicle listed in Point 4 of the Regulation No. 725 of the Cabinet of Ministers “Regulation on the technical modification of vehicles” (hereafter - modification rules) are not considered technical modifications.

For example:

  • for vehicle manufactured before 1 January 2001 – change of engine for the engine of the vehicle of the same make and model, and the kind (positive or compression ignition), if such engine is intended for this vehicle by the manufacturer, and if, by the change of the engine, supports of the engine are not affected, as well as if the change of the engine does not substantially influence effectiveness and functioning of the equipment (e.g., braking, steering) and systems;
  • temporary removal of seats, keeping their anchorages;
  • installation (or removal) of the tarpaulin frame and of the tarpaulin for the platform body;
  • installation (or removal) of fairings (spoilers, anti-wings);
  • covering windows with materials reducing light transmission within allowed limits.

In order to obtain information concerning technical modification and technical expertise of vehicles, contact the Technical Department of CSDD at 6, S.Eizenšteina street, Riga, or call 67025735.

If the technical modification has been carried out and the vehicle participates in the road traffic, the registration of this technical modification must be done within 5 days (see chapter “Registration of the changes in vehicle technical data”).
