Conversion for the right side traffic

Starting from 01.11.2018, two solutions are possible in accordance with the requirements in force in Latvia in order to register vehicles (passenger cars) of category M1 intended for the left-side traffic:

  1. by adaptation using additional equipment, or
  2. by technical modification moving the controls to the left side.

The procedure in case of technical modification is as follows:

  1. The technical modification must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of Annex 3 to Regulation No. 725 of the Cabinet of Ministers “Regulation on technical modifications of vehicles”.

Essential technical requirements for the adaptation of the vehicle:

  • it is allowed, only if the manufacturer produces vehicles of the same make and model intended for the right-side traffic;
  • only components of the same make and model are allowed;
  • steering mechanism must be intended for the right-side traffic; 
  • the car must be fitted with the European type certified and respectively marked lamps intended for the right-side traffic;
  • window wipers must be positioned according to the right-side traffic;
  • dashboard must have all measuring and indicating devices positioned according to the right-side traffic, and they have to function properly.
  1. The vehicle must be presented for the technical expertise as following the technical modification of category one at any roadworthiness testing station suitable for the given category of vehicle.
  2. Having received approval of the technical expertise, the owner (holder) of the vehicle no later than within 5 days applies for the registration of this technical modification at any of CSDD Service centres.
