Conditions of selling a vehicle

General information

The vehicle may be sold to a legal person or a natural person who has reached the age of majority, or to a natural person who has reached the age of 16, if the vehicle is permitted to be driven from the age of 14 or 16.

When selling a vehicle or its numbered unit, a title certificate is drawn up in the Trade Register (see the section " Drawing up a title certificate").

When selling a vehicle previously registered in Latvia, the name of the merchant, the number of the ownership certificate and the date of issue must be indicated in the section "Note regarding the change of owner of the vehicle" in the registration certificate. The representative of the merchant certifies the entry with a signature.

When selling a numbered unit previously registered in Latvia, the name of the merchant, the number of the ownership certificate and the date of issue is indicated in the statement of the CSDD regarding the ownership of the numbered unit. The representative of the merchant certifies the entry with a signature.

The merchant is responsible for the compliance of the information specified in the ownership certificate and the marks made in the registration documents with the actual situation.

An erroneously issued ownership certificate can be revoked until the vehicle or numbered unit is removed from the point of sale and not later than within one hour from the moment of drawing up the document by noting the revoked ownership certificate in the trade register and registration certificate or numbered unit certificate. The representative of the merchant certifies the mark in the registration certificate with a signature. The revoked title certificate is kept in the merchant's trade records.

In order to sell a vehicle purchased or imported from a foreign country that is not a member state of the European Union, a document certifying that the import of the vehicle into the European Union from such a country has been executed in accordance with the legislation on customs matters (customs document) is required. After the sale of the vehicle, the customs document is not issued to the acquirer of the vehicle, but the mark "EU goods status" is made in the ownership certificate.
