Vehicle registration deadlines

Motor vehicles (cars and lorries, buses, motorcycles, tricycles, quadricycles), their trailers and semi-trailers and mopeds involved in road traffic:

  • Within 5 days after the vehicle is brought into Latvia. If the imported vehicle is not used in road traffic, it may be not registered, but the vehicle must be presented for vehicle data verification within five days after importation into Latvia;
  • Within 5 days after the change of owner of the vehicle;
  • Within 5 days after the change of holder of the vehicle;
  • Within 5 days after the change in the technical registration data of the vehicle;
  • if the owner (possessor) leaves the country driving the vehicle himself or issues a power of attorney to leave the country to a person who is not the holder indicated in the registration certificate of the vehicle and the name, surname or title of the owner (possessor) of the vehicle has changed;
  • until the next roadworthiness test of the vehicle or until driving the vehicle out of the country, if the name, surname or title of the holder of the vehicle has changed;
  • vehicles temporarily imported for use by foreign citizens or stateless persons, in road traffic for more than three months.

Series-production mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles not intended  for road use by the manufacturer, if such vehicle crosses public roads:

  • Within 5 days after the vehicle is brought into Latvia;
  • Within 5 days after the change of owner of the vehicle; 
  • Within 5 days after the change of holder of the vehicle;
  • Within 5 days after the change in the technical registration data of the vehicle.

Registration is voluntary:

  • if the address of the owner, possessor or holder of the vehicle has changed for a vehicle registered in Latvia;
  • if a vehicle registered in Latvia has been granted the status of a historic vehicle;
  • series-production mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, not intended for road use by the manufacturer and which does not cross public roads.
